Happy Birthday Joan Didion

“Character — the willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own life — is the source from which self-respect springs.” – Joan Didion

The great style icon (satorial & in writing) turns 82 years old today.

Not only am I a fan of her writing, I also love her no-nonsense relaxed sense of style. She has always managed to look so cool and effortless.

Here's her packing list in an excerpt from the White Album (1979) Vogue.com. She often traveled coast to coast for work.

Six outfits inspired by her found on Elle.com.

Didion Documentary alert! There is one coming soon. You can visit this website for more details.

Giving Thanks

Wishing you a delicious long holiday weekend from my corner of the world to yours.

Prides Crossing, Massachusetts - Fall 2015

In post election time, it makes me ever so grateful to spend quality time like Thanksgiving with friends and loved ones.  I'm planning on taking advantage of the quiet weekend in LA and going to see the film Manchester By the Sea. My husband and I lived in the town right next to it when we were living in Massachusetts these past 2 years, so it'll be fun to see how it is portrayed on film.

Art: Philippe Halsman and Salvador Dali

Philippe Halsman and Salvador Dalí collaborated on many photography projects with Halsman shooting Dali as the subject. The most famous one is Dalí Atomicus, which depicts the artist Dalí suspended in air with a bucket of water, three cats, a chair and the Leda Atomicus painting.

The photo was created in 1948 with a complicated set up and team working together to make all the subjects appear in suspension, at the same time, in an interesting composition. Philippe was a creative genius when it came to setting up a picture with props and techniques which would normally be created very easily and quickly today in Photoshop.

TIME Magazine recently listed Dali Atomicus as one of "The Top 100 Photographs of All Time" and features the process of how the photograph was created in the video below.

The video is narrated by my dear friend Irene Halsman, Philippe Halsman's daughter.

Los Angeles: Grand Central Market

After participating in a peaceful protest in downtown LA last weekend, we decided to head to the Grand Central Market for lunch. After walking for three hours straight, we were ready to eat!

There are many options at this massive indoor food market, and we decided to go to try Berlin Currywurst. Currywurst is the most popular street food in Germany. They offer a pared down menu and the food is presented in an authentic and simple way.

I had the original Bratwurst with special tomato curry sauce (you tell them how hot you want it), with a beet salad and fries on the side. It hit the spot.

Berlin Currywurst has two more locations, one in Silverlake and another in Chelsea Market, NY.

In the Studio: New Business Cards!

I just redesigned my business cards and had them printed with moo.com.  They offer a selection of different papers – I chose the Luxe line. The paper stock is nice and heavy, and even smells good!

I was inspired by a floor tile pattern I had seen and made it my own. Inspiration is anywhere you look for it.

If you need help with your business card design, feel free to contact me. I would love to help.

Project Launch: Rustic Canyon

We're proud to share this latest restaurant website project.

Rustic Canyon Wine Bar & Seasonal Kitchen grew from a series of dinners that founder Josh Loeb held inside his family’s beautiful tree house of a home nestled in Rustic Canyon, an intimate neighborhood carved into the mountains of Santa Monica.

The restaurant is an extension of this, where friends near and far can come together and celebrate the best things in life: great food, great wine, and great people.

Rustic Canyon offers a regularly changing menu of Farmers’ Market-inspired dishes with ingredients that come from local farmers, ranchers, and fishermen who practice sustainable agriculture.

I've been working with the Rustic Canyon Restaurant Group since I first designed Josh and Zoe's wedding invitations and website years ago. Over the years, I've seen the restaurant group grow and expand and have helped them with their sister restaurant websites.

Just in time for their 10th Anniversary, Josh was ready to update Rustic's website and I couldn't be more thrilled.  He really wanted to keep the branded look of the previous site, while also making it feel up to date and user friendly.  This entailed building it in Wordpress and using larger photos to show of the delicious food, ingredients and restaurant.

The site was created to be mobile-friendly and easy for the management to make daily menu changes on their own in the back-end of the site.

From Josh:

"Sheila is fantastic to work with. We've had a longstanding relationship with her dating back to when she designed the website for our wedding, and then moving on to our restaurants like Huckleberry and Milo & Olive. She recently did a much needed revamp of our Rustic Canyon website and it looks great.  Sheila is creative and collaborative and really easy to work with.  We're looking forward to working with her on our new projects."
